![]() Rather than forcing a standard solution, we’re interested in making more possible. For us, each problem is a unique event, requiring a unique answer. ![]() Below are some of the REACH-compliant options available as replacements for hexavalent chrome and cadmium coatings and platings. Whatever the problem, we have a coating solution for it. While chrome (and cadmium) platings are inexpensive and easy to apply, their environmental and health risks outweigh the benefits. At Praxair Surface Technologies, our broad portfolio of coating materials and application technologies ensures you get equivalent or better performance compared to hexavalent chrome and cadmium containing platings without associated environmental regulations and employee hazards. It is included in the list of chemicals that have been identified as substances of very high concern, the use of which is restricted and can only be used under authorization in Europe. Wastes generated also must be treated and disposed as hazardous waste. The hard chromium plating process uses hexavalent chromium based raw materials in plating tanks and emits a mist into the air that must be ducted away and removed by scrubbers. It is the most toxic form of Chromium and is a known carcinogen. Hexavalent Chromium containing material is under REACH requirement and authorization list in the EU and is heavily regulated by the EPA in the United States. This means increased protective measures - and costs - now follow the use of the material. The use of hard chrome plating is heavily regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States because it is a known carcinogenic process. However, modern metallurgical science has provided thermal spray coating options with many similar wear and resistance qualities. From corrosion protection to resistance to sliding wear or abrasion, hard chrome plating is a favored option for appearance and strength. It is used in both industrial and decorative applications due to its abrasion resistance and other unique properties. Hard chrome plating provides a shiny, hard and anti-corrosive surface on existing metals. Those vents were in pretty rough shape when I dropped them off, and very intricate to polish, but I checked out some VW wheel trims they had done, and they looked very nice.Hard chrome plating roared onto the scene in the 1920s and was primarily used on motorcycles and cars to combat corrosion and wear. I'm convinced their shop is just a front, and that the work is being done in Mexico.however, the prices were VERY reasonable, and the results were totally acceptable. The vents I had done on our vintage stove were done by some guys in La Mesa operating under the name Lemon Grove Plating. ![]() I want to say the rear bumper was $175, and the front quarter bumpers were $75 each on my Cortina. The bumper I mentioned above was done at Escondido Plating. '66 MGB widened 11" with supercharged LT1 Chevy and 6 speed, C4 Corvette suspension "If you want me to agree with you then we would both be wrong" Perhaps increased regulations are adding to his overhead, but I find it hard to believe that he's having a tougher time than a chrome shop in my neck of the woods. My understanding is that copper and chromium prices are down from where they were a few years ago (chromium way down) so I can't see that driving the price up. Even if that shop doubled their prices, I'd be nowhere near $650. The last bumper I had rechromed locally was about 18 months ago, and it was under $200. Wow, I would consider that VERY expensive, even by SoCal standards.
